Some may recall that I started a Gab.ai account a few months ago (see this Kp blog post), as an alternative to Twitter. I learned about it by listening to David Seaman, who rather raved about it, and the fact that it was focused on giving subscribers freedom of expression, without the restraints we are now (clearly) seeing on Twitter, FaceBook, and YouTube. According to this interview, they are opening up for new subscribers (without a wait time) at the end of this month. They are also introducing a paid subscription service called Gab Pro, which unlocks more features.
I very much enjoyed watching this video with Gab.ai founder, Andrew Torba, interviewed by Owen Shroyer. Very well done, in my view. And illustrates how Twitter, YouTube, and FaceBook, with their “we’re watching you and will cancel your account if you say anything about _______ (fill in)” attitude.

Gab is the brainchild of Andrew Torba, an adtech startup founder who now lives in Austin, Tx. After a stint in Silicon Valley, He found the politically progressive atmosphere of the Bay Area to be stifling, making him uncomfortable about expressing his views, and he has now taken on the mission of fixing what he sees as the censorship that plagues online spaces. The tipping point that pushed him to leave the tech bubble and start Gab came earlier this year, when he read that several Facebook employees had come forward to divulge that the network’s trending topics section was actively suppressing conservative news. “I knew I had to take action,” Torba says.
